You know those days when you just don’t feel like yourself. Your energy has plummeted. You don’t feel like getting out of bed let alone completing your to do list. There are many reasons for these feelings. Hormones, not eating right, dehydration, or just neglecting your self care in general. These are the days you need to focus on your mental health and self care but they are also the days you don’t want to have to think about how. This is where your Mental Health Rescue Basket will come in. Before you hit that inevitable low day, create yourself this basket that you can go to when you start to feel blue.

Caring for Your Mental Health

Caring for our mental health is just as important as taking time to care for our physical health. When we’re physically sick, we take the day off from work or school or whatever else to get better. But when we’re having a bad mental health day, we often feel that we should just keep going and get over it. Maybe that can work for a while but eventually that will catch up with you. By reminding ourselves that caring for our mental health is just as valid as caring for our physical health, we can avoid prevent things from getting worse.

Making Your Own Mental Health Rescue Basket

  1. Choose a basket. I like one that has an open top because lids just get in the way. Also, I like baskets better than something like a drawer because it is more obvious. Sometimes when things get put in the drawer they get forgotten about (“out of sight, out of mind”).
  2. Keep it somewhere you are going to remember where it is when you are in need for it. Make it easy to get to because the last thing you will want to do when you are feeling low is look for something or dig in a too full closet.
  3. Fill it with items that help you focus on your self care. Some ideas include:
    • journal and pens
    • water bottle
    • vision board supplies
    • books
    • word puzzles and other “unplugged” activities
    • skincare items
    • Bible or other spiritual guidance
    • book of inspiring quotes
    • crystals
    • candles or incense
    • coloring book
    • headphones
    • brain dump notepad
    • favorite tea
    • go-to easy meal plan

It is really that simple. It is just a matter of keeping all the things you need to help you get out of your funk easily accessible so it is an effortless activity for when you need it.

Reminder

I want to finish up this quick post with a little reminder. You deserve to take care of your mental health. You deserve to prioritize your self care. Even if you can only steal away 15 minutes from your list of to do’s to focus on yourself, take it. You will feel so much better if you learn to include your care in your list of people you care for.
