Sometimes you are just too busy to fit in self care. Or are you? Here are some self care ideas you can do in 10 minutes or less. Who doesn’t have 10 minutes to care for themselves?
Drink A Tall Glass of Water
Feeling stressed, tired, or just off? Drink a glass of water. It sounds simple but has an impact. Taking the few minutes it takes to drink a glass of water is often enough of a pause to refocus your mind. And, sometimes you are tired or not feeling like yourself because you are dehydrated. Many of us don’t drink enough water throughout the day, especially when we are busy working or under stress. That is actually when it is the most important for us to keep up with drinking enough water. So, stop what you are doing right now, and get some water. Just do it.
Go for a Short Walk
You don’t have to walk far to reap some of the benefits. Walk down the driveway and bring in the garbage cans. Walk through the garden and pull a few weeds, or simply take a walk around the block to get some benefits of being outdoors and getting moving.
Give Yourself A Foot or Hand Massage
After a long day at work your hands and feet might be sore by the time you plop on the sofa. Grab a nice lotion and take a moment to rub your sore muscles. The act of massaging increasing blood flow to the area and the fragrance of the lotion can have some relaxation benefits as well. But simply taking a minute to be mindful of how your body feels is essential for self care.
Do a Few Stretches
Along the same lines as a massage, listening to how your body feels and taking a moment to stretch is a perfect, and quick, self care activity you can include into your daily routine. First thing in the morning, or when you are ready to relax for the night, take a moment to stretch out your stiff muscles.
Take a Few Deep Breaths
Deep breathing is the best self care activity you can do. Making a point to stop what you are doing to take a few mindful breaths can do wonders, especially when stressed. Not only do you invite more oxygen into your blood but simply diverting your thoughts to your breath is the perfect way to pause and refocus your mind.
Wash and Moisturize Your Face
Want to some more energy after a particularly tiring afternoon? Wash and moisturize your face. Anytime of the day is a good time to wash your face. No need to wait until bedtime. Start your evening with this self care practice to give you the energy to last the next few hours before heading to bed at a reasonable hour.
Eat Some Fruit or Veggies
Looking for a snack? Have something healthy like a piece of fruit or some veggies. You might “want” potato chips or chocolate but you will thank yourself later for making the more sensible choice.
Take a Shower
Take a quick shower when looking for some extra self care. Make it even more luxurious by using your favorite soaps, shampoos, and moisturizers.
Soak Up Some Vitamin D
Especially first thing in the morning, getting some sunlight on your face can do a lot for your mood throughout the day.
Try Some Aromatherapy
Diffuse your favorite essential oils, add some to a bath, or light some incense and breath in some relaxing scents.
Change into Something More Comfortable
Get into your pjs before dinner. Love your sweats, make them your Sunday attire. There are no rules. Getting comfy is a great way to relax.
Lie Down for a Few Minutes
I love this one. My bedroom is my happy place so often times mid afternoon I might lie down on my nicely made bed for a few minutes just because it makes me feel good. Learning to take a physical break in your day can improve your self care exponentially.
Put on Some Music
I have touted the benefits of a perfect playlist a few times on the blog. It helps you relax your mind and has the power to motivate you like nothing else.
Journal
Get your pen and paper out. Journaling is a quick self care practice you should try to include into your routine. Want to learn how to start your own journal practice, check out my tips here.
Declutter Your Desk/Dining Table/Coffee Table Etc.
It is amazing how good a clear table top can feel. I don’t know why but it was especially clear when my husband walked into the living room this past weekend and said it looked so much cleaner when all I had really done was clear the coffee table. Who knew it was so easy?
Play With Your Pet
My bunny Daisy has a way of uplifting me like I never could have imagined before getting a pet. I was never much of an animal person and when my kids asked for a pet I never would have thought I would be so happy to have a pet as I have been. Spending a bit of time with your pet is good for you and for them so get in some regular snuggle time.
Have Some Tea
Take a midday break for some tea or coffee. It can get as fancy or simple as you like. Read more about my midday tea routine here.
Light Some Candles
I love to light a few candles in the evening when watching tv. There is just something “extra” about candlelight that just lifts me up that little bit I might need in the evening.
No More Excuses
There is something for everyone on this list so there are no more excuses not to take care of yourself. Some things you have to do anyway (like showering) and others are so simple why not try them (like lighting a candle). How are you going to take care of yourself today?
