Staying Motivated
Now for the fun part – habit tracking and tracking your progress. It’s important to have fun with this so you will stay motivated to follow through with your goals.
Missed the beginning? Return to step one here.
Here are some ways I use to keep moving forward.
Vision Board
With apps like Pinterest there is no shortage of inspiration out there on the internet. Creating Pinterest boards with images and blog posts that are aligned with where you want to be, like this one, is a great start. If you are of the more analog variety, cutting pictures from magazines or printing them out and assembling the pictures in a collage is another format for vision boards.
I enjoy making vision boards with Canva. It is super easy with their free templates – just search for a vision board template and fill it with your own images or stock images that speak to you. Just drag and drop images from the menu on the left. It couldn’t be easier.
Here is an example of mine. I included images to represent all aspects of my life: Social (family time), Recreational (hobbies), Mental Health (self care), Spiritual Health (journaling), Physical Health (eating healthy), Environment (enjoying my front porch), Career (blogging and working from home), and Financial Health (being able to enjoy all these things without stress of how much they cost). You could take it one step further and even make a vision board for each of these categories or just for the ones you are focusing your priorities on. Ready to create yours? I used this template for mine.
Word of the Year or Month
At the start of 2024, I decided to define each month with a word that I could focus my goals around.
For example: my word for January was RESET. I set goals to reset my health by learning about gut health and how to heal it, goals to reset my routine to reduce stress and goals to reset my priorities and focus on self care. Then in February my word was HEART. I set goals to cook heart healthy meals, practice self love, get vulnerable and try new things, and get back to practicing hobbies I once loved.
As the year has gone on, one over-arching theme for the year appears to be TRANSITION. I am transitioning my mindset to focus on what really matters, the dynamics of our family are changing as my daughters transition into teenage-hood, and this is our first year living in our new house which has been an on-going project and full of shifts.
Habit Trackers
No matter whether you are trying to start a new habit or break an old one tracking your progress helps you see just how far you have come and can give you the motivation to keep going. I have been using a the I AM SOBER app for tracking my sobriety. I really helped me get motivated to keep going and reach 100 days sober and beyond.
Many planners have trackers in them for tracking your water and vitamin intake or workouts. The internet is full of free printable habit trackers that you fill in with the habit you are tracking. And, with the popularity of bullet journaling, there is a ton of DIY inspiration out there as well.
